Finally the news that I have been waiting for along with many others I should imagine?
Martin Whitmarsh -
“Following our decision to register our intention to appeal the penalty handed out to Lewis Hamilton by the FIA Stewards at the 2008 Belgian Grand Prix, we hereby confirm that we have now lodged notice of appeal”
GAME ON… So it has now been officially confirmed that McLaren will be appealling against the retrospective drive through penalty that was issued just hours after the end of the race at Spa on Sunday evening.
25 seconds where added to the race time of Lewis Hamilton after the chequered flag, the length of time that a drive through penalty would have taken, as a result of this Lewis was relegated to 3rd in the final standings giving Felipe Massa his 5th win of the season and consequently closing the drivers championship gap down to just 2 points.
Probably exactly what the FIA wanted, looks like they are getting their close finish they desire. This week so far there have been many rumours in the mill that suggest that the FIA are doing 1 of 3 things:
- Aiding Ferrari to another World Driver / Constructor Championship
- Hindering McLaren to a Driver / Constructor Championship
- Doctoring results to ensure that the Championship stays close with no runaway leader like in last years closing races.
Back to the appeal, finally McLaren have strapped on those kahunas and have decided to oppose the FIA in their decision and go for it. A press release by McLaren Mercedes stated the following:
Martin Whitmarsh -
“Following our decision to register our intention to appeal the penalty handed out to Lewis Hamilton by the FIA Stewards at the 2008 Belgian Grand Prix, we hereby confirm that we have now lodged notice of appeal. Lewis describes the incident as follows.”
Lewis Hamilton -
“In the closing stages of the race I was catching Kimi consistently, lap by lap, and with three laps remaining I got close enough to attempt to overtake him on the entry to the last chicane. I managed to get slightly ahead of him in the braking area for the first apex of the chicane. He fought back approaching the second apex – but, in doing so, he left no room for me on the inside line. The only way for me to avoid a collision was therefore to cut inside the second apex.
“I came out of the second apex in front of Kimi and so I momentarily lifted-off on the straight, to ensure that Kimi got back in front. The team also came on the radio and instructed me to allow Kimi to repass, which I had already done. As a result, Kimi crossed the start/finish line ahead of me and 6.7km/h quicker than me.
“After allowing Kimi to completely repass, I crossed from the left side of the track to the right side of the track, passing behind Kimi in the process. I then attacked Kimi on the inside of the first corner, and successfully outbraked him.”
Martin Whitmarsh -
“From the pit wall, we then asked Race Control to confirm that they were comfortable that Lewis had allowed Kimi to repass, and they confirmed twice that they believed that the position had been given back in a manner that was ‘okay’.
“If Race Control had instead expressed any concern regarding Lewis’s actions at that time, we would have instructed Lewis to allow Kimi to repass for a second time.”
So it seems as though the story is set out and by the sounds of things they have the evidence to support it, I am a McLaren fan and I don’t mind saying that I hope this decision gets overturned, but for the sake of the sport more than anything I hope that they see sense that this is a crazy decision and it has certainly caused some upset with the sports true fans who want to see a fair “race”.
So what now?
Well, the FIA need to schedule a meeting with all those involved, I am guessing Martin Whitmarsh, Ron Dennis, Stefano Domenicalli, Lewis Hamilton, Kimi Raikkonen, Charlie Whitmarsh, Bernie Ecclestone and all the race stewards involved in Sundays decision, did I miss anyone?
When the meeting is in session the group will thrash it out for keeps and all evidence will be viewed intensively leaving no stone un-turned, the only down point for McLaren could be that because they have appealed, the FIA now have the power to penalise them further, maybe docking them championship points as well as grid placings for future races.
I guess that all we can do is wait and once again have the fate hanging on the balance of a group of sweaty men in suits calling the shots and destroying our beautiful sport.
